Year after year, Frost has been reaching new heights and breaking new grounds. It owes much of its achievements to the hard work and dedication of its outstanding leaders. These are the people who exhibit our core values and mastered their craft, the people whose ideas and vision shaped the Frost you see today.

In this limited series, we’ll tell you their stories of struggle, sacrifice, and success, and we’ll share how these people earned their stripes as esteemed Frost Practice Heads.

The Content Team, founded in 2019, is one of the service pillars of Frost. It’s the team behind the company’s unique voice, whose headlines and blurbs provide the perfect partners to the stunning visuals of Frost designers. At the helm of this team is our Practice Head, Iñigo.

As Content Director of Frost, Iñigo de Paula is more than just a manager. He also serves as the mentor of the Content Team. His experience in UI and UX writing is second only to his decades of copywriting experience, and he draws from this background the skills and knowledge he shares with the rest of the team.

“I actually started writing professionally even before I graduated,” Iñigo says. “I think I was a junior in college when I heard there was this opening for a lifestyle correspondent in a newspaper.”

This first career highlight continued his lifelong love affair with the art of weaving words

“They liked my portfolio, which was all for student newspapers, and thankfully they took a risk in me,” he recalls fondly. “Me, a bright-eyed junior in college.” This first career highlight continued his lifelong love affair with the art of weaving words, an art that would eventually lead him to UI and UX writing.

With national broadsheet bylines in his portfolio, Iñigo would continue building his career by working with big players in different industries, including public relations, real estate, tech, entertainment, and journalism. He’s worked in companies such as Shang Properties and Solar Entertainment. As a freelancer, his writing has graced the pages of Rappler, Mabuhay Magazine, and Art+, among many others. His wide experience is the inspiration for the writing course he developed for Frost.

Drawing From Experience

Under Iñigo’s mentorship, the Content Team brushed up on their writing fundamentals while also adding a few tools to their writing arsenal. One such example is thematic writing. Iñigo credits this particular style to the lessons he learned while writing for a department store.

“It (my writing) was for the launch of one of their food brands. They prepared set-ups for each type of cuisine,” Iñigo explains. “The copy I wrote had to be on-theme. That was really an eye-opener for me because I learned to write using different personalities, with different themes.”

That lesson certainly proved useful and the course it later inspired was a success. The ability to adapt to different requirements became a cornerstone of Iñigo’s team. Today, Frost writers are able to span the unbelievable spectrum of whatever needs a client project might have.

All in the Approach

Like all jobs that require mastery, writing is not without its challenges and Iñigo was no stranger to challenging assignments.

“One of my projects back was the launch of a women’s wear brand,” he says. Iñigo remembers being stressed about it because it was going to be attended by members of high society. “Then the manager tells me a celebrity was going to host the event and I needed to write her spiels.”

“I had an aversion to celebrity types,” As a self-professed nerd, celebrities used to make Iñigo nervous. “I read about her in the society columns, and she was in all these trendy parties. Based on that, I didn’t think we’d get along.” The assignment was particularly rough because he needed to work closely with this celebrity host.

“On the day itself, I had to spend an hour going through the script with her. I was totally prepared to have a difficult time,” Iñigo confesses with a chuckle. “She turns out to be the nicest ever. We saw each other again and she greeted me first and remembered our project. She was really sweet. I learned not to judge people so hastily.”

There are no “disliked” or “boring” topics when it comes to writing. It’s all in how you approach it

To the young Iñigo, that assignment was far from ideal but the lesson he learned from it was that there are no “disliked” or “boring” topics when it comes to writing. It’s all in how you approach it and, when you do, you have to do so with an open mind. You never know if that assignment you are so “ready to dislike” would turn out to be “the sweetest ever.”

Building the Dream Team

When it comes to screening writers for the team, you don’t have to remind Iñigo to keep an open mind. As Content Director, his interview is one of the gates candidates have to pass in their application to Frost. His philosophy in hiring is maximizing the range of the team’s writing abilities and the key to this is curiosity.

Does a client want a fashionable and youthful vibe in their copy? We can definitely do that. Do they want something serious and academic? Easy. What about a voice that’s equal parts authoritative and approachable? Yup, we can do that, too.

“In addition to having the writing chops, I'm also looking for certain personality traits,” Iñigo explains. For him, it’s not just about being a capable writer. If you’re looking to become a Frost writer, a firm grasp of the basics is only the start. “I want someone who is curious. I want to meet someone who's excited about the challenge, someone who wants to learn how to write even better.”

Curiosity is the cost of admission to the team but it’s not the only thing that’s needed. Iñigo also believes the passion that fuels that curiosity to be critical. “I’m excited to meet people who are fascinated by different cultures, subcultures, themes, and fandoms. Just people who are excited about stuff, and have strong opinions about stuff. Someone who will get offended when you, for example, assume their Hogwarts house incorrectly.”

Writing Is Meaningful Work

Iñigo’s journey in Frost certainly has had its many twists and turns but if there’s one thing he doesn’t want anyone to forget, it’s all about the spin. True to his writer roots, he believes that views and perspectives are all in how you spin it. You can spin it negatively and stagnate, or you can spin it positively and discover new ways to look at the world.‍

“Make your own inspiration,” Iñigo reminds everyone. “If something doesn't strike you as interesting right away, keep digging and keep looking. That takes a lot of hard work.”

When starting out, he urges writers to focus on a single message, “No writing is beneath you. No writing is boring. No writing is worthless. Because writing is worth doing.” Every snappy witticism, every clever kicker, every single line, the Content Team is proud of the help they provided for clients in many Frost projects.

“Whether it’s a little call-to-action on an app screen or a massive hero copy that will be the centerpiece of a campaign,” Iñigo concludes with a satisfied smile, “it's meaningful work.”

We’ve looked back at the past and surveyed the present, but what does the future hold for Iñigo de Paula and the Content Team? As always, there are big plans on the horizon and there are big dreams cooking. With their unique approach to creating content, you can expect greater things to come out of the content team!
